TAKE PART IN 2024 UPDATE OF THE ORKNEY HOUSEHOLD ENERGY SURVEY
Please consider taking a moment to fill in this survey. We were going to do something very similar as part of our Climate Action plan, but we don’t want to duplicate the work, so Aquatera have agreed to share area specific data with the Trusts so that it can feed into the plan. Only with the data can we make decisions on what help could be called upon and looking for grant funding that may be available. Filling in this survey will hopefully help give us an overview of Shapinsay.
Help develop understanding of energy use, fuel poverty and decarbonisation in Orkney and be in with a chance to win a £50 Kirkwall Bid voucher.
Five years ago a Household Energy Survey was undertaken in Orkney and created a benchmark for understanding energy use, fuel poverty, attitudes and affordability of adopting new technology, and measuring decarbonisation in Orkney over time.
There were more than 2000 responses and it was integral for the development of decarbonisation projects in Orkney, along with Orkney Island Council’s Fuel Poverty Strategy.
The 2019 survey was conducted as part of the ReFLEX Orkney project, funded by Innovate UK, who are also funding the 2024 survey that is being run this time through the Rural Energy Hubs project. The project partners Aquatera, The European Marine Energy Centre, Community Energy Scotland and The Orkney and Shetland Islands Councils are working to accelerate decarbonisation in remote and
rural communities.
Now we’re asking Orkney households to complete an updated version of the survey to gauge energy usage across the Isles, pin-point households that may need help with energy usage and compare results from the previous survey. This data will help design programmes for decarbonisation over the next 5 years, with the aim that the survey will be repeated every 4-5 years in future.
Ian Johnstone, Aquatera Director and Rural Energy Hubs Project Director, said: “This survey will really support the work we are doing within the project to support the community to decarbonise. Understanding how households use energy and the choices they make will inform the solutions we will present.”
We’re hoping to repeat the fantastic response which last time saw more than 20% of Orkney’s households taking part. So as an incentive everyone who includes their email address when they return the survey will be entered in a draw to win a £50 Kirkwall Bid voucher.
The survey will shortly be delivered to all Orkney households and will include a QR code to link to it, or alternatively you can complete the survey online using these details: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/XY5756M

The deadline for submitting the survey is 1 November 2024.
