Objectives and aims
The main objectives of the charity are:
A) To provide in the interest of social welfare, facilities for recreation and other leisure time occupation available to the public at large in Shapinsay with a view to improving their conditions of life;
B) To advance education and in particular to promote opportunities for learning for the benefit of the general public;
C) To protect and/or preserve the environment for the benefit of the community and the general public;
D) To provide or assist in the provision of housing for people in necessitous circumstances within Shapinsay;
E) To relieve poverty particularly among the residents of the island of Shapinsay;
F) To promote Shapinsay trade and industry for the benefit of the community and the general public;
G) To promote, establish operate and/or support other schemes and projects of a charitable nature for the benefit of the community of Shapinsay.
Current projects are: Balfour Cottages (awaiting planning and funding)
Community Energy Scotland (CES) Rural Energy Hubs Expert Community of Practice on Transport! The title is long, but it’s essentially experience sharing on sustainable transport in the isles (Orkney and Shetland) with an Orkney visit to Shetland and a Shetland visit to Orkney included.
Community Energy Scotland Climate Action plan – 6+ of the Island Development Trusts are working together to create individual Climate Action Plans for our individual islands, supported by a dedicated development officer for the project, till March 2024.
Community Energy Scotland Community Resource Centre – This is package of funding to set up a community resource centre to create a space within our building where there is a computer, conferencing equipment and information available for the general public to come and find out more on climate action – more information to follow.
